Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. Aunt Denise was a nurse, who worked night shifts so that she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her life, but spent every summer in the company of the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the waste from one of juries. As a result of her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. From this position she started her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotions, like The Urban Beauty Collective.
